Maria Sharapova has claimed that her fourth-round exit at Wimbledon should not come as a surprise.
The former champion was beaten in the fourth round on Tuesday, losing an epic three-set encounter to Angelique Kerber.
However, Sharapova insists that results are not always dictated by who is the favourite heading into the match.
"Just because you come in as a favourite doesn't mean you are guaranteed to hold the trophy," the Russian is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
"People anticipate certain matches, but results don't always turn out that way."
Following her win over Sharapova, Kerber will now face Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter-finals.
