Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been knocked out of this year's tournament in the second round after falling to a 7-5 7-6 (7-5) defeat against Ekaterina Makarova.
In a match that began on Friday but spilled over into Saturday because of poor weather at SW19, Russian Makarova claimed the first set before the rain-related postponement.
When action restarted the next day, the 2011 and 2014 winner took her opponent to tie-break in the second set but could not turn it around as she became the second former champion to be knocked out on Saturday following Novak Djokovic's early departure.
Makarova, ranked 35th in the world, will face Barbora Strycova in round three and may have to play on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday because of the backlog of matches caused by rain delays throughout the first week.
