Maria Sharapova has exited Wimbledon in the second round after suffering a 6-3 6-4 defeat to world number 131 Michelle Larcher de Brito on Wednesday.
Sharapova, who needed constant treatment on a hip injury, was broken in her second service game of the opening set, before Larcher de Brito held to move 4-1 ahead.
Each player exchanged a break of serve in the latter stages of the set, but it was the Portuguese who managed to move into a one-set lead.
Sharapova was broken once more at 1-1 in the second, before Larcher de Brito held to go 3-1 ahead.
The Russian continued to struggle with a hip injury as the set developed, with Larcher de Brito serving it out to book her spot in the third round.
