Hot favourites Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee have failed to medal in the men's triathlon event at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
Alistair entered the competition as the defending champion and was widely expected to retain his title but in a tight race, he fell away in the final leg - a 5km sprint - as South Africa's Henri Schoeman took top honours.
A front pack of six athletes were within one second of each other heading into the sprint - including both brothers, but both were outpaced in the final stretch as Jonathan finished seventh and Alistair in 10th, the latter some one minute and six seconds behind Schoeman.
Jacob Birtwhistle of Australia claimed the silver medal, finishing seven seconds back, while the surprise recipient of the bronze was Team Scotland's Marc Austin after an impressive race which saw him among the contenders from start to finish.
Team England's other competitor, Tom Bishop, made his Commonwealths debut with a 19th-place finish, some 3 minutes and 44 seconds back.
Earlier, Jess Learmonth picked up silver for Team England in the women's triathlon event.
