England's Ali Jawad wins bronze in the men's lightweight para-powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games, with Nigeria claiming gold and silver.

England's Ali Jawad has won the bronze medal in the men's lightweight event of the para-powerlifting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with Nigeria picking up gold and silver.

Jawad produced three successful lifts of 155kg, 159kg and 161kg in the event, which sees points awarded to the athletes based on how much they lift relative to their bodyweight.

The 29-year-old ended with a score of 182.7, comfortably clear of Malaysia's Bonnie Gustin, whose best lift was five kilograms heavier than Jawad but saw him finish fourth due to his greater bodyweight.

Nigeria were hot favourites going into the event having claimed all eight gold medals since the sport was introduced to the Commonwealth Games, with world-record holder Paul Kehinde expected to push for top spot on the podium.

However, Kehinde had to make do with silver after failing with attempts to equal his own world record at 221kg and then better it at 222.5kg.

The significantly-lighter Roland Ezuruike - also from Nigeria - claimed the gold medal despite his best lift being 17kg less than that of Kehinde, earning 224.3 points compared to Kehinde's 219.9.

England's Oliver Brown finished sixth, while Nathan Stephens of Wales could only manage a 10th-place finish.
