Dario Cologna of Switzerland takes gold in the men's skiathlon event at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

Swiss skier Dario Cologna has come out on top in the men's skiathlon event at the Laura Cross-country Ski and Biathlon Center to take gold.

Cologna was strongest with a time of 1:08.14, while Vancouver Games champion Marcus Hellner of Sweden came in second place at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The bronze medal was won by Norway's Martin Sundby, who finished just one tenth of a second ahead of Maxim Vylegzhanin in fourth place.

Team GB's Callum Smith, who admitted that he was aiming for a top-50 finish, crossed the line in 62nd position.
