2010 Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams says that Lizzy Yarnold can follow in her footsteps after the first two heats of the women's skeleton competition at Sochi 2014.

Former Olympic champion skeleton rider Amy Williams has stated that there is "no reason" Lizzy Yarnold cannot follow in her footsteps and bring home the gold medal.

Yarnold broke a track record during her first heat of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, while a 58.46 second run has her remaining top of the leaderboard at the halfway point of the event.

Williams, reporting on the skeleton event for BBC Sport, said: "It's amazing. I couldn't be happier. Lizzy took the tap, but importantly didn't skid. Four tenths of a second is a huge lead. It's going to be close.

"Today is going to give Lizzy so much confidence, though. It's actually a joy to see her slide. She's got to be consistent. There is no reason why she can't win gold for us."

Yarnold ended the day 0.19 seconds quicker than her nearest rival, Noelle Pikus-Pace of the USA. Team GB's Shelley Rudman sits in 11th place, with a time of 59.33.

The final two heats of the women's skeleton competition take place tomorrow.
