Team GB skiers Andrew Young and Callum Smith admit that they found it surprisingly difficult battling the Sochi heat as they finished 37th and 67th in the men's 15km classic.

Team GB athletes Andrew Young and Callum Smith have conceded that they struggled with the warm Sochi conditions while competing in the men's cross-country skiing.

Young was the fastest Briton in the 15km classic as he came 37th in a time of 41:29.6.

Smith completed his Olympic campaign with a 67th-place finish, and has revealed that the unfamiliar hot skiing conditions in Russia even forced him to change his race attire.

"It is hard quite hard, I am wearing a T-shirt rather than a race suit," he told reporters. "It is not often you race in 13 degrees or whatever it is. It does make it a little bit harder.

"The tracks are soft. You just feel really warm. We took on drinks every lap, which we wouldn't normally do in a 15km."

Young added: "You are just dying the whole way around. I had four drink stations today and normally in a 15km I don't drink at all. It was hard. I don't how I managed to ski so fast. The wax technicians did a phenomenal job – that helped a lot. I just felt really good."

Briton's Andrew Musgrave also competed in the event, finishing 44th.
