New Leeds United manager Steve Evans: 'I deserve this opportunity'

Steve Evans insists that he deserves to be the new Leeds United manager because of his track record in recent years.

Leeds United's new manager Steve Evans has insisted that he does deserve to be in charge at Elland Road.

The 52-year-old former Rotherham United boss was yesterday confirmed as the Whites' new manager, succeeding Uwe Rosler, who was sacked after just 12 games in charge.

Evans played his entire career in Scotland between 1979 and 1986 and has only ever managed Boston United, Crawley Town and Rotherham in the Football League.

However, he believes that his recent track record, including successive promotions with Rotherham in 2013 and 2014, means that he deserves a chance of managing a club of Leeds's stature.

"I think [Leeds owner Massimo Cellino] wanted me because of my track record," Evans told reporters. "I've got a CV which maybe warrants a bigger opportunity."

Evans is confident of getting Leeds, who have not tasted victory in 11 games at home, back to winning ways.

"The supporters should get ready for winning football because it's going to come," he added.

Evans also revealed that he spent nine hours with Italian Cellino, who has been disqualified again by the Football League, on Sunday after initially planning to spend just a couple of hours with the Leeds owner.

His first game in charge will be against Fulham on Wednesday.
