Erling Braut Haaland's father reveals that the Manchester City striker is "touch and go" to face Liverpool in the Premier League after the international break.

Erling Braut Haaland's father has revealed that the Manchester City striker is "touch and go" to face Liverpool in the Premier League after the international break.

Earlier this week, the 22-year-old was forced to withdraw from the Norway squad ahead of Euro 2024 qualifiers against Spain and Georgia after sustaining a groin injury.

A statement from Norwegian team doctor Ola Sand read: "We hoped that this was just a familiarity that would carry over to Saturday, but after doing tests and examinations yesterday it became clear that he will not make it to the games against Spain and Georgia.

"It is better that he receives medical follow-up at the club."

Haaland was in phenomenal goal-scoring form prior to the international break after netting eight goals in his last two matches against RB Leipzig and Burnley, scoring five in a 7-0 Champions League win over the former and a hat-trick in a 6-0 FA Cup victory against the latter.

Haaland's recent flurry of goals has seen him increase his remarkable tally for the season to 42 after just 37 matches across all competitions, and has subsequently become Man City's all-time record goalscorer in a single season.

However, City's No.9 has now emerged as a doubt for their next fixture against Liverpool in the Premier League on April 1, according to his father Alfe-Inge Haaland.

Speaking to Norwegian news outlet TV 2 Sport, as quoted by The Times, Alfe-Inge said: "Manchester City has a partnership with a hospital in Barcelona so he has been there for further checks and treatment.

"Now he has been [in Marbella] for a couple of days with the physio from the club. Firstly, I'm not a doctor and secondly, I think it's 'touch and go', yes. You can't just go two weeks without training and then jump right into a fight. There must be a progression there.

"They can gamble on it, but if he doesn't get proper training with the team, then he won't play. It is about how he responds to treatment in the next few days. He needs a lot of care."

Haaland will be determined to make himself available for the battle with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium, as he bids to break the all-time Premier League scoring record in a single season.

The Norwegian currently boasts 28 top-flight goals in 26 matches, and he is only four goals away from equalling Mohamed Salah's record of 32 goals in a single 38-game Premier League season, while he is just six strikes behind both Alan Shearer and Andy Cole who scored 34 goals in a 42-match season.

However, should Haaland fail to prove his fitness for the clash with Liverpool, the striker will be looking to return against Southampton a week later, before the Citizens play host to Bayern Munich for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on April 11.

Man City currently sit second in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal who have played a game more, while Liverpool are down in sixth place, seven points behind the top four with two games in hand. body check tags ::
