Sports Mole casts an eye over Liverpool's 1-1 draw with ten-man Newcastle United at Anfield.

Liverpool and Newcastle United shared two goals and the spoils at Anfield this afternoon.

Yohan Cabaye gave the visiting Magpies the lead at the break, before Suarez salvaged a point for the hosting Reds after the restart. Newcastle also ended the encounter a man light when Fabricio Coloccini was handed his marching orders.

Here, Sports Mole has looked back on the encounter to determine if either side was deserving of the three points.

Was the result fair?

If either side can put up a convincing argument to say that their performance warranted the win, it was Liverpool. Having said that, there were not too many occasions where Tim Krul in the Newcastle goal was called into any telling action. For all their hard work and disciplined defending, Newcastle deserved their point.

Liverpool's performance

It was the same old Liverpool at Anfield today. They dominated possession and got into a number of positions to score. But as so often this year, the final pass or finish was lacking. On a positive note, Brendan Rodgers's side looked relatively comfortable at the back.

Newcastle's performance

You know what you are going to get from Newcastle and they showed it today. They defended extremely well and when they were breached, Krul was there to thwart the danger. One thing that may concern Alan Pardew is the fact that his side struggled to create goalscoring chances for large parts of the match.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Luis Suarez: Once again the Premier League's Marmite player shone for Liverpool. Things didn't quite click for Suarez in the first half, but after the restart he seemed to find a new lease of life. His goal was top class and Newcastle couldn't live with him at times. What would Liverpool do if he got injured?

Biggest gaffe

Having drawn level at 1-1, Liverpool immediately raced forward in search of a winner. Suarez cut the ball back for substitute Jonjo Shelvey, who had the goal at his mercy. However, he got his feet all wrong and Krul was able to collect.

Referee performance

Anthony Taylor had one big decision to make and with the help of his assistant, he got it correct. Fabricio Coloccini can have complaints with the verdict to send him off for a challenge on Suarez. Other than that, Taylor had a quiet game.

What next?

Liverpool: Following a trip to Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League, the Reds are then on the road again next Sunday to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle: Like Liverpool, the Magpies are in European action on Thursday night when they travel to Club Bruges. After that, West Ham United visit the North-East.
