Manchester City are through to the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup after extra time against Newcastle United.

Two goals in extra time secured Manchester City a place in the quarter-finals of the League Cup at the expense of Newcastle United this evening.

Shola Ameobi looked to get the home side off to a quick start as he picked out Papiss Cisse, but the striker could not keep his lob on target.

Moussa Sissoko came close to breaking the deadlock in the 30th minute, but Joleon Lescott blocked his effort, before Costel Pantilimon saved the rebound from Ameobi.

Ameobi did find the back of the net in the first half, volleying in from a scuffed effort by Cisse, but the striker was judged to be offside.

The Magpies continued to look the more likely to score early in the second half as Vurnon Anita tested Pantilimon just five minutes after the restart, but could not get the better of the City keeper.

The visitors had one of their first chances of the match in the 55th minute, when James Milner swung the ball in for Micah Richards, but the defender headed just over.

Tim Krul had to be sharp shortly after as City started to get a foothold in the match, but the keeper was able to deny Milner from 35 yards out.

The Dutch keeper kept Newcastle on level terms again in the 78th minute, when Edin Dzeko played Alvaro Negredo in, but the Spaniard's finish was tipped wide by Krul.

Yoan Gouffran came within inches of sealing a late winner for Newcastle, but he headed just wide, ensuring that the game headed into extra time.

Cisse had the first chance in the extra 30 minutes, picking up a high ball inside the box, with just Pantilimon to beat, but he struck his shot straight to the City keeper.

Negredo was finally able to break the deadlock in the 99th minute, tapping in from close range from a low Dzeko cross.

The Bosnian striker was able to add a goal of his own six minutes later, latching on to a ball from Milner before rounding Krul to slot it into an empty net.

Cabaye had a late chance cleared off the line as Newcastle tried to rescue the game, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
