How Manchester United could line up against Roma

Manchester United welcome Roma to Old Trafford on Thursday, for the first leg of a Europa League tie which is potentially pivotal in determining the success of their season.

They do so with relatively few absences to contend with, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has first-choice trio Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay back from serving one-match suspensions during the quarter-final second leg victory over Granada.

Only Anthony Martial and Phil Jones are still unavailable for selection through injury - Martial injured his knee on international duty last month and is not expected to return to action before the end of the season, while Jones remains ruled out due to a long-term knee injury.

After signing a new contract with the club, Eric Bailly returned to training having recovered from COVID-19 and made the bench at the weekend, so should once more provide back-up to Maguire and his regular central-defensive partner Victor Lindelof.

Solskjaer's side is most likely to feature Fred and McTominay as its defensive-midfield pairing, with both Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani - left out of the lineup last time out in the Premier League - set to come back into the starting XI.

Daniel James and Mason Greenwood are the most likely to make way for the experienced duo, while Marcus Rashford overcame a foot issue that kept him out of training late last week to play on Sunday, so should start in support of Cavani.

Alternatively, Greenwood would keep his place in the centre of the hosts' attacking trident, with Pogba perhaps featuring in the more prominent attacking role that seems to suit him so well.

Manchester United possible starting lineup:
De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, McTominay; Pogba, Fernandes, Rashford; Cavani
