Seeking to quickly recover from their Anfield heartache, Newcastle United return to St James' Park for Saturday's Premier League showdown with Crystal Palace.

The Magpies agonisingly went down 2-1 to Jurgen Klopp's side on Wednesday evening, while the visitors were pegged back in a 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Match preview

As far as dream debuts go, scoring the winner at Anfield for the visiting team is right up there, and Alexander Isak was perhaps dreaming of such a golden scenario coming to fruition after firing home the opener for Newcastle against Liverpool in the 38th minute.

The offside flag denied the towering Swede an opportunity to double his tally before the Reds fought back, with Roberto Firmino's coolly-taken effort levelling the scores before Fabio Carvalho rifled home a volley eight minutes into second-half injury time.

The two dugouts clashed as Liverpool rejoiced in a dramatic late victory while Newcastle players collapsed with their heads in their hands, and that result leaves Eddie Howe's side eleventh in the table with six points to their name.

Winning just one of their opening five Premier League matches was not in the script for Newcastle, who have now gone four games in the top flight without success since defeating Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

Giving Liverpool and Manchester City a good run for their money can certainly be viewed in a positive light by the St James' Park faithful, who have only seen their side lose once at home in the Premier League during the calendar year, and Palace were hardly left overjoyed with their midweek result either.

From scoring a stunner to giving a brutally honest post-match interview, Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha went through all the emotions on Tuesday night, as his side could not hang on for all three points against Brentford at Selhurst Park.

Zaha's wonderful curling effort put the Eagles in the ascendancy just before the hour mark, but as he has done so often in his Brentford career, Yoane Wissa came off the bench to restore parity for the Bees as he met Vitaly Janelt's cross to head home in the 88th minute.

Zaha made his feelings crystal clear after the game as Palace collected a point which leaves them 13th in the embryonic standings, and as is the case with their upcoming opponents, Patrick Vieira's side only have one top-flight win to their name so far this term.

Ending a four-game Premier League winless run on the road is next on the agenda for Palace, and one should not hedge their bets on a drab goalless stalemate this weekend, as each of the Eagles' last five top-flight games away from home has seen both teams score.

Newcastle and Palace have also been drawn against one another in the third round of the EFL Cup, and the Magpies will endeavour to replicate their 1-0 success over the Eagles from St James' Park last season, where Miguel Almiron struck the game's only goal.

Team News

Newcastle continue to cope without midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and right-back Emil Krafth for the long-term, and Saturday's game will likely come too soon for Callum Wilson to return from a thigh injury.

There is hope that midfield enforcer Bruno Guimaraes will be fit to make his comeback from a similar issue, and the same can be said for Allan Saint-Maximin, who is another hamstring casualty.

Such a valiant showing at Anfield could lead Howe to name an unaltered XI for the battle with Palace, which would force Sven Botman and Elliot Anderson to try to make an impact from the bench.

As for Crystal Palace, Vieira did not pick up any fresh concerns in the stalemate with Brentford and continues to cope without James Tomkins, Jack Butland, James McArthur and Nathan Ferguson for the time being, but Will Hughes will be part of the squad after shaking off a knock.

Butland is not thought to be too far away from returning from a hand fracture, but fellow goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has found it hard to displace Vicente Guaita, who should continue as the last line of defence.

Tyrick Mitchell was dropped to the bench in midweek but will push to start over Joel Ward on Saturday, and Jean-Philippe Mateta's place in the attack is under threat from Odsonne Edouard.

Newcastle United possible starting lineup:
Pope; Trippier, Lascelles, Burn, Targett; Willock, Longstaff, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Fraser

Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Guaita; Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell; Schlupp, Doucoure, Eze; Olise, Edouard, Zaha

We say: Newcastle United 2-1 Crystal Palace

Scoring and conceding away from home has been the theme for Crystal Palace over the past few months, and a similar pattern should be followed here, with Newcastle still vulnerable at the back at times.

Both teams will be fired up to put their midweek disappointments behind them, but the bouncing St James' Park atmosphere, potential returns of Guimaraes and Saint-Maximin and Isak's explosive start will all work in Newcastle's favour as Howe's side seek to grind out a narrow victory.
