Newcastle United salvage a draw after being two goals down, a brace by Papiss Cisse gifting the Tyneside club a 2-2 draw at St James' Park.

Newcastle United have fought back from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw against Hull City in this afternoon's Premier League clash at St James' Park.

Both sides played skirmishing, attacking football from the start, the first chance falling to the visitors in the third minute when Mohamed Diame blasted an effort wide of the goal.

The Magpies, languishing at the bottom of the Premier League at kickoff, were arguably the more threatening of the two sides, as Remy Cabella was sent clean through after a fine Moussa Sissoko through-ball, but the Frenchman's resulting shot was weak and failed to trouble Allan McGregor.

Jack Colback then nearly scored with a neat half-volley in the 11th minute following a good cross into the box, but the Hull goalkeeper was able to get his hands to it.

Yoan Gouffran was the next Newcastle player to threaten two minutes later with a header, with McGregor again thwarting his opposition.

Nevertheless, Hull were able to push forward from time to time, with Nikica Jelavic threatening Tim Krul midway through the first half.

The second half began with a flourish, as the Croatian striker broke the deadlock for the Tigers after just three minutes played with a spectacular acrobatic effort.

Things would get worse for beleaguered Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, as his side fell further behind in the 68th minute, thanks to another impressive Hull goal.

Diame was able to turn away from Daryl Janmaat 25 yards from goal, take aim and smash a left-footed effort which flew past Krul and into the net.

Nevertheless, Papiss Cisse came on for Newcastle in the 71st minute, and within four minutes had pulled a goal back for Pardew's outfit, lashing home Cheick Tiote's pass at the near post.

The Senegalese striker struck the equalising goal with just three minutes of regulation time left to send the home side's fans, all but resigned to defeat twenty minutes earlier, into raptures.

Gouffran expertly knocked down a cross into the box at the back post into Cisse's path, the 29-year-old duly heading home to make it 2-2.
