Carlos Carvalhal relishing Championship playoff final after penning new deal

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal claims that he only wanted to sign a one-year extension to his contract, but is more than happy to remain at Hillsborough.

Carlos Carvalhal has admitted that he is happy to remain at Sheffield Wednesday for the long term after agreeing to sign a new three-year contract at Hillsborough.

The 50-year-old has yet to officially put pen to paper on new terms, but revealed in his press conference ahead of this weekend's Championship playoff final that a deal has been agreed in principle.

Carvalhal has spearheaded the Owls' push to the brink of the Premier League in his first season on these shores, with just one more match - Saturday's meeting with Hull City at Wembley Stadium - now standing between his side and a return to the big time following a 16-year absence.

"We are near the final and I understand it is a good moment to talk about this," the Portuguese told reporters. "I signed for another three years here. I didn't want to sign for that long - I wanted one year - but the chairman wanted three.

"I don't need four years contract. I don't need money - I'm good with my life. If this happens, I'm happy. Being happy is the people around you enjoying what you are doing. If they are, I can stay here 10 years. [When joining], we probably had 1% chance to get promoted.

"But even then, we had 100% faith. With time, we have achieved the playoffs. At that point, we had 25% of the chances as there were four teams. At this moment, we have 50% of the chances to win, even though in my opinion we are underdogs. We have more faith now."

Former Besiktas boss Carvalhal had been out of work for three years prior to joining Wednesday last June.
