Mark Hughes "reasonably pleased" with opening-game draw

Mark Hughes is "encouraged" by Southampton's hunger to claim all three points against Burnley, but concedes that his side 'required a bit of luck' to draw 0-0.

Southampton manager Mark Hughes has admitted to having mixed feelings on the back of his side's 0-0 draw with Burnley at St Mary's Stadium.

The Saints claimed a point in their opening Premier League match of the season, largely thanks to an inspired display from goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to shut the opposition out.

Hughes concedes that three points was the target against a Burnley side competing three days on from a trip to Turkey, but at the same time he is "encouraged" by some of the play he saw.

"I thought we got better as the game went on. We changed it in the second and had any number of chances to win the game," he told BBC Sport. "We got on the front foot, stopping them hitting balls into the channel. We needed a bit of luck but overall I'm reasonably pleased.

"There's no need for us to be apprehensive. We're a good group of players here and we always want maximum points. We weren't quite able to do that today but I was encouraged."

Southampton are winless in their last five opening-day matches in the Premier League, last winning in August 2013 away at West Bromwich Albion.
