Martin Glenn: 'Tottenham Hotspur to blame for Spurs slow start'

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn says that Harry Kane's slow start to the season is due to Tottenham Hotspur's pre-season tour of Asia.

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn has blamed Tottenham Hotspur's pre-season tour of Asia on Harry Kane's recent form.

Kane scored his first goal of the season during Spurs's 4-1 victory over Manchester City.

"It was great to see Harry score for Spurs. The performances I have seen have certainly merited that reward," Glenn told reporters.

"A number of our young players are thriving in the league having played in the Under-21 tournament during the summer - although they didn't all embark on commercial tours of the Far East with their clubs as Harry had to with Spurs.

"International experience is vital for our young players. Every nation to have won a major tournament can trace their success back to their development teams. We need to respect and recognise the importance of playing for England and the great benefits it can bring to young players."

Kane scored 31 goals in 51 appearances for Spurs last season.
