Tottenham Hotspur announce the departure of head coach Andre Villas-Boas following Sunday's 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that they have parted company with head coach Andre Villas-Boas after just one full season at White Hart Lane.

Rumours that the Portuguese coach was on the verge of losing his job at White Hart Lane emerged following his side's 6-0 loss to Manchester City last month.

Following the loss, the ex-Chelsea boss guided Spurs to a draw and two victories in the Premier League.

However, pressure began to tell once more on Sunday afternoon when the North London outfit succumbed to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on home turf.

Tottenham released a statement on their official website saying: "The club can announce that agreement has been reached with head coach Andre Villas-Boas for the termination of his services.

"The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties. We wish Andre well for the future. We shall make a further announcement in due course."

It has been suggested that conflicts emerged between Villas-Boas and chairman Daniel Levy during the season, with reports claiming that the 36-year-old did not choose all seven of the club's new signings in the summer.

Spurs are said to have spent around £100m on acquiring the services of Vlad Chiriches, Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli following the departure of Gareth Bale, who moved to Real Madrid for a reported £85m.

Tottenham are seventh in the league table after 16 games.
