Wales hammer Australia to reach World Cup quarter-finals

Wales hammer Australia 40-6 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup and push the Wallabies towards the exit door at the tournament.

Wales have become the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup courtesy of a record 40-6 hammering of Australia in Lyon.

The crucial Pool C clash turned out to be an utterly one-sided affair as Wales produced their biggest-ever win over the Wallabies in one of their most important meetings yet.

Eddie Jones's side went into the match knowing that victory was essential to keep their World Cup hopes alive, having fallen to defeat at the hands of Fiji last time out.

However, they produced an error-strewn display and were ruthlessly swept aside to pile more pressure on Jones and likely set themselves on course for elimination in the pool stage for the first time.

Whereas Australia failed to turn up when they needed to most, Wales came flying out of the blocks and took the lead after only three minutes when Gareth Davies went over.

The two sides exchanged penalties throughout the rest of the first half to leave Wales 16-6 ahead at the break, but Ben Donaldson's 14th-minute kick proved to be Australia's final points of the contest.

By contrast, the boot of Gareth Anscombe kept the scoreboard ticking over for Wales as he knocked six penalties, one drop-goal and a conversion over - the latter coming after Nick Tompkins's 48th-minute try.

Captain Jac Morgan capped off a memorable night for Warren Gatland's men when he scored their third try of the contest from a driving maul late on, sealing a record winning margin for Wales in this fixture. body check tags ::
