A last-gasp Theo Riddick touchdown gives the Detroit Lions a dramatic victory over the Miami Dolphins.

A Theo Riddick touchdown in the final minute of the game handed the Detroit Lions a 20-16 victory over the Miami Dolphins.

Things did not start well for the Dolphins, who slumped to a 10-0 deficit before the end of the first quarter, with Matt Prater giving the Lions an early lead via a field goal.

After missing the Lions' trip to Wembley for their last game against the Atlanta Falcons a fortnight ago, the returning Calvin Johnson quickly showed his team what they were missing, scoring a 49-yard touchdown by hauling in Matthew Stafford's long pass.

The Dolphins - who easily dispatched of the San Diego Chargers last weekend - responded with two Caleb Sturgis field goals either side of half time.

The game was turned on its head as the third quarter came to a close, with a punt from Prater being blocked by Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan.

Though it looked as if Jordan would run the ball in for a score, Kellen Davis brought him down just shy of the goal line. Shortly afterwards, Ryan Tannehill found Mike Wallace, who converted where Jordan couldn't to give the Dolphins the lead.

Another Prater field goal levelled the contest in the fourth quarter, but Miami again edged ahead with under six minutes remaining.

Tannehill attempted to find Charles Clay twice as the Dolphins looked to score a touchdown, but the tight end dropped the second catch attempt, meaning that they had to settle for another Sturgis kick.

With Miami looking likely winners, Stafford once again drove his side downfield. Although Johnson failed to haul in one of his passes, the quarterback found Riddick on the next play, allowing the Lions to steal the win.

Victory strengthens Detroit's position in the NFC North, which they now lead with a record of 7-2.
