Leslie Frazier: 'Josh Freeman will have chance to start'

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier insists that newly-acquired quarterback Josh Freeman will have the chance to push for a starting spot.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier has insisted that Josh Freeman will have the chance to push for a starting spot once he is up to speed with the team's offense.

Freeman joined the Vikings yesterday after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a disappointing start to the season for the controversial quarterback.

The Vikings currently have Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel competing for the starting role, but Frazier has said that the opportunity of first-team action was central to luring Freeman to the franchise.

"I mean, that's part of the equation. When we talked with him, that's definitely on the table, so we'll see how well he progresses and how well he picks up our offense," Frazier told reporters.

Freeman's career has been blighted with off-the-field controversies, but Frazier believes that the Vikings have done enough research into the 25-year-old to overcome those problems.

"You hear so many things; you have to find out what's true and what's not. Once I did a little digging and had a chance to talk with him, I think we'll be able to coexist. I think we'll be all right," he added.

Freeman played in every game for the Buccaneers last season, throwing for a career-high 4,065 yards and 27 touchdowns.
