New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie backtracks on an interview he gave on the ongoing dispute regarding the use of marijuana in the NFL.

New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie has had to backtrack on comments that he made regarding the NFL and their marijuana policy.

In an interview with rapper 50 Cent's website ThisIs50.com, Cromartie was questioned about the league's views on drugs, with a recent report suggesting that commissioner Roger Goodell was ready to legalise some substances on medical grounds.

Cromartie said: "The NFL need to just let it go. We're just going to do it anyway. They just need to let it go. They need to go ahead and say, 'Y'all go ahead, smoke it, do what you need to do'. It's not a thing."

Cromartie's use of the word "we're" was questioned by many, with some suggesting that it meant that he himself was a user of the drug.

Taking to his personal Twitter account to defend himself, he said: "The interview that I did on the weed policy, I never said 'We're' I said that 'Players' will smoke anyway. I don't smoke so I don't care about it.

"I guess when there's nothing to talk in the football world this is what happens."

The two Super Bowl teams this season - the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos - both hail from the only two states in the USA in which the sale and possession of marijuana is legal for both medical and non-medical uses.
