Seattle Seahawks cornerback Antoine Winfield has retired from the game after 14 seasons in the NFL.
The 36-year-old was signed by the Seahawks in the off-season following his release by the Minnesota Vikings.
However, the veteran defensive back struggled during his side's pre-season games and reports suggest that he was not going to make Pete Carroll's 53-man roster.
"Wishing Antoine Winfield the best in his decision to retire. He's a consummate pro and a great team player. We were lucky to have him," Carroll wrote on Twitter.
Seattle face the Carolina Panthers in their season opener next week.
