Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden admits that he wants to change his side's offensive approach in the 2014 season after replacing Mike Shanahan at the club.

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden has revealed that his side won't be using the read-option offense as much next season as they have done in the past.

The 47-year-old has admitted that he wants to change the approach of his team and quarterback Robert Griffin III after replacing Mike Shanahan at the club as they posted a 2-14 record in the 2013 season.

"Personally my belief is the read option is better as an element of surprise," Gruden told Sports Illustrated. "If you're making it a major focal point of your offense — though they had success with it — that's problematic.

"You want to have some of it, no question, because it's the way to get the numbers back in your favour offensively. And with a quarterback like him, why wouldn't you have some of it? But we're trying to develop him as an all-around quarterback."

Griffin has thrown for 6,403 yards and rushed for 1,304 in his first two seasons in the NFL, scoring 43 touchdowns for the Redskins.
