Usain Bolt: 'Tyson Gay should have been kicked out of athletics'

Usain Bolt says that he is "not looking forward" to competing against Tyson Gay, following the American's return to sprinting after serving a doping ban.

Six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt has said that Tyson Gay should have been banned from athletics for life for using performance-enhancing drugs.

The American was suspended for a year after failing three drugs tests in 2013, although he received a lighter penalty after co-operating with the US Anti-Doping Agency.

Gay returned to sprinting last summer and has since run faster times than Bolt, but the Jamaican believes that those who cheat should face harsher penalties.

"It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The message should be: 'If you cheat, you're going to be kicked out of the sport'," Bolt told The Times. "I'm not looking forward to competing against Tyson.

"I'm not worried about him beating me, it's because I respected him so much. It's a bit like parents must feel when they have a kid who does something bad and lets them down.

"You have to drive fear into athletes, to make them think about the consequences of their actions. If they're getting an easy penalty why would they care?"

Gay's 100m personal best of 9.69 seconds is the American record and is the third-fastest time recorded in history.
