Team GB's Jessica Ennis has said that she is shocked at her gold-medal success in the Olympic heptathlon.
The 26-year-old, who missed the Beijing Games through injury, set a new British record earlier this evening by recording 6955 points from the seven events.
"I'm so thankful to everyone who's helped me along the way," Ennis told BBC Sport. "I told myself at the start that I'm only going to have one moment to do this in front of crowd a in London and I just wanted to give them a good show.
"I honestly can't believe it after all the hard work and after the disappointment in Beijing. I am just so happy. I want to thank everyone who has supported me, they have been amazing.
"I am so thankful that everyone has helped me all this way. I just had to give it everything at the end. I just wanted to make sure I gave them something and bought it all home."
Ennis's nearest rival, Russia's Tatyana Chernova, finished 327 points behind her in second place.
