Sports Mole hands out awards for the most memorable moments from the athletics at the London Olympics over the past few days.
Sports Mole's Olympic athletics awards

The London Olympics is now just hours away from coming to an end.

As with most Games, the athletics action inside the Olympic Stadium has provided a number of the talking points for the watching world.

With that in mind, Sports Mole has dished out a number of awards for the moments that have stuck in our memory.

Best Team GB moment

Quite rightly, many British supporters will remember Saturday, August 4 for as long as they live. Team GB won three, yes three, gold medals in the space of 45 minutes thanks to Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah. However, that doesn't win this award. Our winner is Farah though, but for his victory in the 5000m on the final Saturday of the Games. The distance runner powered away from his Ethiopian and Kenyan counterparts down the home straight to claim gold, which is something British athletes simply have never done! The noise he created inside the stadium was also unrivalled throughout the entirety of the Games.

Special mention: Ennis winning heptathlon gold.

Best non-Team GB moment

Surely this is Usain Bolt winning three gold medals, isn't it? Prepare to be disappointed. We're going for the men's 800m final, where Kenya's David Rudisha smashed the world record into pieces on his way to winning gold. All eight of the finalists broke some sort of record during the race, be it a personal best, season best or national record - in some cases all three! GB's Andrew Osagie's time of 1:43.77 would have been enough to win the last three Olympics. He finished last!

Special mention: The USA's women's 4x100m relay team breaking the world record in the final.

Most disappointing Team GB moment

Not the nicest award to be dishing out, but nonetheless it goes to Dai Greene. He was highly fancied to contest for a medal in the men's 400m hurdles. However, he never seemed to get going. Having scraped into the final as a fastest loser, the Welshman finished fourth in the final. His performance in the final of the men's 4x400m relay also failed to meet expectations.

Special mention: Goldie Sayers suffering with injury in women's javelin qualification.

Most disappointing non-Team GB moment

Everyone was hoping that China's Liu Xiang would be at his competitive best in the men's 110m hurdles. He simply wasn't fit though. An Achilles injury had hampered his preparation leading up to the Games and as he approached the first barrier in his heat, there was no leap in his body and he crashed into the hurdle. It was extremely disheartening to see such a world star being wheeled out of the stadium.

Special mention: Morgan Uceny tripping up in the women's 1500m final.

Most inspiring moment

She may have finished around 40 seconds behind the race winner, but that was not important to Sarah Attar. Having completed the 800m in a time of 2:44.95, the young student had become the first female to represent Saudi Arabia in the athletics at the Olympic Games. Forget the time, Attar's presence embodied the spirit of the Olympics.

Special mention: Ashton Eaton's performance in the men's decathlon.
