Utah Jazz point guard Trey Burke has been told that he will be out of action for between eight and 12 weeks with a broken finger.
The 20-year-old sustained the injury in the pre-season loss against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday.
Burke was originally listed to be out indefinitely and a scan has now revealed that he is certain to miss the start of the new season.
The first-round pick from this year's Draft will need pins to be put on his fractured finger, meaning that he could miss nearly three months of basketball.
Burke recorded a record 260 assists for the Michigan Wolverines in his sophomore season before entering the Draft earlier this year.
