WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero has been arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport for attempting to board a plane with an unloaded handgun.
The 30-year-old was in New York to promote his May 4 bout with Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
Before boarding a Las Vegas-bound flight on Thursday, the American declared a .40 calibre Smith and Wesson semi-automatic pistol, along with three ammo magazines, to a Delta Air Lines attendant.
However, he was still in violation of the state's strict gun laws.
As a result, the three-weight world champion has been charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon and three counts of third-degree criminal possession.
The charges could see him imprisoned for up to four years.
Guerrero was being filmed by a television crew from the Showtime network for their pre-fight reality show 'All Access' at the time of the incident.
He was released without bail but is due back in court on May 14.
