British welterweight Amir Khan has admitted that he has "wasted his time" after revealing that he will not be facing Floyd Mayweather on May 3.
It had been reported for several months that Khan was in pole position to face Mayweather in Las Vegas, with the former world light welterweight titlist stating at the end of 2013 that he had signed a deal to face the pound-for-pound king.
However, Marcos Maidana threw himself into the mix with a surprise victory over Adrien Broner, and despite winning a poll that was seemingly being used to decide the American's next opponent, Khan has taken to Twitter to inform supporters that he has given up hope of landing the lucrative bout.
As of yet, there has been no official confirmation that Mayweather has agreed to a unification clash with the WBA champion, but that is expected in the coming days.
Khan stated earlier this week that he had already began the search for another opponent, with Broner and Kell Brook likely to be in the running to face the 27-year-old.
