The Commonwealth Games Federation "respect" the decision to refuse accreditation to Team Wales boxer Fred Evans.

The Commonwealth Games Federation has backed the decision to refuse accreditation to Welsh boxer Fred Evans.

The 23-year-old was denied accreditation to compete at Glasgow 2014 by the relevant officials, including the Home Office.

Team Wales have expressed their 'bitter disappointment' in the decision, but it is yet to be made clear why the sportsman was refused a chance to compete at the Commonwealth Games.

In today's press conference, CGF chief executive Mike Hooper said: "First and foremost, the CGF itself doesn't get directly involved in undertaking security checks. All of us in this room, to receive our accreditation code were subject to those and if we failed, we would not be receiving an accreditation code - myself included.

"The reality is, for all major events, a lot of you were at London 2012, the exact same process applied and the regular authorities - the Home Office etc undertake background checks and processes. There's a Games Accreditation Decision Board who review all these cases.

"Those policy perimeters are set through that body, decisions are taken and it's made very clear that all associations signed up and agreed that should anyone fail background checks, then they would not get an accreditation. I don't have all the details personally of particular cases, but that is the policy. Our board took the decision that would abide by and respect the decisions of the authorities here, like in Melbourne 2006 and in Delhi 2010."

Evans, who was ordered to pay a fine of more than £1,000 back in April after admitting to being involved in a nightclub assault in Birmingham, did not travel with the rest of Team Wales to Scotland on Tuesday.
