Steve Smith: 'It's a thrill to be named captain'

Steve Smith is elated to be named as captain of Australia in the absence of Michael Clarke ahead of the second Test of their series against India.

Steve Smith has said that it is a dream for him to be named as captain of Australia.

The 25-year-old will replace Michael Clarke as skipper after he sustained a hamstring injury in his side's win over India in the first Test, which is expected to rule him out of the rest of the series.

Smith was recalled to the Australia side early last year and impressed during the Baggy Greens' whitewash victory over England in the Ashes. He continued his fine form with a century in his side's 48-run win over Virat Kohli's men in Adelaide .

He told reporters: "It's obviously been a whirlwind 18 months for me personally, and for the team as well. It's something I've always dreamed of doing.

"To know I'm leading Australia in Brisbane and for the rest of the series is an amazing thrill.

"We're going to continue playing that aggressive brand of cricket. As a captain, first and foremost I'll try and lead from the front with my performance on the field."

The second Test of the series starts on Wednesday in Brisbane.
