Australia have won the first Test against India, holding off a late comeback from the tourists for a 48-run victory in Adelaide this morning.

India had headed into the final session on day five needing 159 runs for victory, having been set a target of 364 to win the match, and Virat Kohli continued to add to the score once play resumed, reaching 141 to finish the Test with centuries in both innings.

Murali Vijay fell just short of his ton though as Nathan Lyon trapped the opening batsman lbw for 99, while the bowler sent Ajinkya Rahane back to the pavilion for a duck in the same over.

Lyon's dominant spell with the ball continued as he picked up three more wickets before the end of the match to finish the innings with 7-152 and 12-286 throughout the match.

Following the dismissals of Vijay and Kohli, only wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha (13) reached double figures as Peter Siddle helped Lyon restrict India to just 73 off the final seven wickets to wrap in victory,
