Australia are in command of the first Test against New Zealand after bowling their opponents out for 183 before ending day one on 147-3 in Wellington.

Australia have ended day one of the first Test against New Zealand in control after bowling their opponents out for 183 before reaching stumps on 147-3 in Wellington.

Josh Hazlewood was the star bowler of the day for the Aussies as he took four wickets, including captain Brendon McCullum, who went for a duck after facing seven deliveries.

New Zealand were 84-5 by lunch as Australia's bowlers dominated play, snatching the wickets of Tom Latham (6), Martin Guptill (18), Kane Williamson (16), Henry Nicholls (8) and McCullum.

In the afternoon session the tourists skittled out the Black Caps, whose Mark Craig top-scored with an unbeaten 41 off 57 balls.

Despite impressing with the ball, Australia struggled with the bat early on as Joe Burns was taken out by Tim Southee for a duck in the fourth ball of the innings.

David Warner did not do much better as he only mustered five runs before falling victim to Southee, leaving the Aussies on 5-2 inside three overs.

Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith were able to recover for their side as they both hit half-centuries, but the captain was later caught and bowled by Craig after scoring 71 runs off 112 balls.

Khawaja and Adam Voges will return to the crease tomorrow unbeaten on 57 and 7 runs respectively.
