England avoid the follow-on by adding 74 runs before being bowled out on day four of the third Ashes Test against Australia.

England added 74 runs to their overnight total this morning to avoid the follow-on and force Australia to take the initiative in the third Ashes Test.

The hosts started the day exactly as they needed to, with Stuart Broad and Matt Prior going at almost a run a ball to ensure that the follow-on was avoided.

Soon after, Broad (32) lost his wicket. The left-hander nicked Nathan Lyon's spinning delivery to Brad Haddin and after the debacle at Lord's in the last Test, decided to not wait for the umpire's finger this time and walked.

That brought Graeme Swann to the crease and the off-spinner bashed a quickfire 11 from 11 balls before he too faintly edged the ball to Haddin, this time off the bowling of Peter Siddle.

Number 11 James Anderson and Prior frustrated the Aussies, who know that they have to win this Test to save the series.

England reached 368 before Prior (30) top-edged a Siddle delivery to David Warner to end their innings, 159 behind the tourists' total.

Australia now need to add quick runs to their lead before possibly declaring and attempting to bowl England out and save the series.
