Australia have two days to score 412 to win the first Ashes Test against England in Cardiff after bowling the hosts out at the end of day three.

Australia have been set a victory target of 412 to win the first Ashes Test against England following day three's action in Cardiff.

The tourists started the final day with five wickets in hand, but England quickly removed the tail and set about building on their first-innings lead of 122.

England skipper Alastair Cook (12) was gone before lunch and then Gary Ballance fell in the first over of the afternoon for a duck.

A fourth-wicket partnership of 97 from Ian Bell and Joe Root, who both scored 60, put England back in control going into the final hours of the day.

Ben Stokes backed up his half-century from the first innings with a score of 42, with Mitchell Starc once again bowling him like he did on day one.

At one point it looked as if Australia would need less than 400 to win the Test, but a late flurry from Mark Wood - 32 not out off 18 balls - helped England extend their lead further.

Nathan Lyon bowled James Anderson out for 1 to bring an end to the innings and day three's play. England need 10 wickets to win the Test, while Australia will take a series lead if they manage 412 at the SWALEC Stadium.
