Australia finish day two of the first Ashes Test against England on 264-5, 166 runs behind the hosts' first-innings mark.

Australia will start day three of the first Ashes Test 166 runs behind England after an up-and-down second day's play in Cardiff.

The tourists managed to take the remaining three English wickets in the day's first session and reached lunch with all 10 wickets still remaining.

By tea, they had lost David Warner (17) and in-form Steven Smith (33) as captain Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers pushed the innings along.

By passing 50, Rogers chalked up his seventh straight Test half-century, equalling the record held by Everton Weekes, Andy Flower, Kumar Sangakkara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

None of his previous six knocks were converted to three figures and once again he fell short by edging a Mark Wood delivery through to Jos Buttler when on 95.

Clarke and Adam Voges edged the Aussies past the 200 mark, but Clarke (38) fell soon after by chipping Moeen Ali's delivery straight back to him for a caught-and-bowled dismissal.

It looked like Voges and Shane Watson would see out the remainder of day two, but Voges became yet another Aussie to fail to build on a decent start as he drove a Ben Stokes delivery straight to James Anderson.

Watson (29*) and Nathan Lyon (6*) will be at the crease when play resumes on Friday morning, with Australia 264-5 and 166 behind the hosts' first-innings total.
