Australia's pursuit of England's first-innings total of 430 was hampered during the afternoon session on day two of the first Ashes Test in Cardiff by the loss of both David Warner and Steve Smith.
However, opening batsman Chris Rogers has frustrated England's bowling attack as the 37-year-old made 74 runs to close in on the fifth Test century of his career and his third against the home side.
Having pushed the tourists on to 26-0 at lunch, the partnership of Rogers and Warner would last just 26 more runs before the latter was dismissed.
Earlier Warner had been reprieved via a video appeal, but on this occasion his edge from a James Anderson delivery carried through to slip, where captain Alastair Cook was waiting to take the catch.
That brought Smith to the crease and despite some nervy moments, the world's number one batsman and Rogers took Australia beyond the 100-run mark.
The duo were broken up just before lunch, though, when Smith fell for 33. The 26-year-old attempted to attack the spin of Moeen Ali, but only succeeded in chipping the ball up for Cook at short mid-wicket.
The removal of Smith brought skipper Michael Clarke to the crease, who when tea was called had contributed to his side by making 145-2, which is 285 runs short of England.
