England are in control of the first Test as they reach lunch on 21-1 with a 143 lead after dismissing Australia all out for 308 on day three in Cardiff.

England have extended their lead to 143 runs at lunch after blitzing through Australia's tail-end to leave the tourists all out for 308 on day three of the first Test at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad took two wickets apiece in the morning session, while Mark Wood snatched a dismissal of his own as England dominated play.

Despite Moeen Ali snatching two wickets on day two, captain Alastair Cook opted to give Broad bowling duties in the early overs of the day.

The 29-year-old came close to taking out Shane Watson lbw in the second over, but the Aussie managed to plant his front foot early. However, he was not as fortunate in the next ball as Broad went straight to trap him lbw.

After Watson left the field having hit 30 runs off 57 deliveries, momentum remained in England's camp as Wood sent Nathan Lyon (6) packing for lbw, leaving Australia 265-7.

With the hosts looking to wrap up the tail-end, Anderson took a significant wicket by dismissing Brad Haddin for 22 as the new ball took the outside edge and fell into the hands of Jos Buttler.

Broad added to his tally by taking out Mitchell Johnson for 14, and Anderson wrapped up the innings in impressive fashion by dismissing Mitchell Starc for a duck.

With a first-innings lead of 122, England returned to the pitch with openers Cook and Adam Lyth, who moved to 15 without loss, but they were in danger of an early wicket when Lyth's loose shot flew into the air.

However, Chris Rogers missed the ball on the off-side as it looped over his head and fell to the ground to give away a single and a let-off for the hosts.

With just 12 runs on the board, Cook was sent packing when he hit a wide delivery that flew into the hands of Lyon off the bowling of Starc, leaving England on 21-1.

Lyth will return for the afternoon session on seven runs alongside Gary Ballance.
