Andrew Strauss: 'England moving backwards'

Andrew Strauss claims that England are going in the opposite direction to the rest of the world after seeing them knocked out of the Cricket World Cup.

Former England captain Andrew Strauss has claimed that the team is moving backwards after seeing them knocked out in the group stage of the Cricket World Cup.

England were beaten by Bangladesh on Monday to end their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Strauss believes that Peter Moores's side have failed to improve in recent years while the rest of world cricket has advanced with both bat and ball.

"It seems like there's been this incredible, unstoppable momentum that has been built while England have been stuck behind and are almost going in the opposite direction," he told Sky Sports News.

"Every game, we've seen the same mistakes - too many dot balls in the middle overs, not bowling at the death properly, not being able to apply pressure in the middle overs, not taking early wickets.

"The truth is we're not good enough - from one to 11, we haven't got the players that can compete with a top team. We couldn't compete with Bangladesh, and certainly can't compete with Australia, South Africa and these teams."

England conclude their Pool A campaign on Friday when they meet Afghanistan in Sydney.
