Ian Bell admits that he was "naive" to walk off the field of play at Trent Bridge.

Ian Bell has admitted that he was "naive" to walk off the field of play during the third day of England's second Test against India.

The Warwickshire batsman was at the centre of a controversial run out on a free-scoring day at Trent Bridge.

When Eoin Morgan had hit what looked like a four, Bell, who was on 137, left his crease thinking that the over, and tea, had been called.

However, the ball was thrown to Indian fielder Abhinav Mukund, who knocked the bails from the stumps.

The tourists then asked for the incident to be referred to the TV umpire who gave Bell as out.

The batsman was reprieved during the break when England captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower approached the visitors' dressing room to ask if they would reconsider upholding the decision.

After a consultation with his team, Indian captain MS Dhoni agreed to reinstate Bell, who went on to make 159.

"I was a bit naive to automatically walk off and assume the ball had gone for four," the England number three told Sky Sports News.

"I think the right thing's happened for the spirit of the game, but it's a shame.

"The way it's been handled is fantastic, the spirit has been fantastic from both teams," he added.

England ended the day on 441-6, with Matt Prior and Tim Bresnan starting at the crease for the penultimate day's play.
