Alastair Cook admits that it has been a "tough 36 hours" for the England side, but was pleased with the display in the victory over the West Indies.

England captain Alastair Cook has admitted that it has been a "tough 36 hours" for the team following the death of Tom Maynard.

Surrey batsman Maynard passed away in the early hours of Monday morning after he was struck by a London Underground train.

Cook scored a century as England cruised to a series victory over the West Indies today but confessed it was difficult to focus on the cricket considering the events of the past couple of days.

"It's been a tough 36 hours for us as a team. It was incredibly sad news, and I think quite a few boys were very emotional, especially during the minute's silence this morning," Cook admitted.

"It has been difficult. Something like this hits you hard. A lot of us have played with Tom, and pretty much all of us have played against him. He's a great lad and he will be missed.

"When something like this happens it puts cricket into perspective. It's been a very, very sad 36 hours. We responded in the right way. We played some really good cricket again today."

A minute's silence was held before the match, which took place at Maynard's home ground of the Kia Oval.
