England beat Afghanistan by 166 runs in their Twenty-20 World Cup opener in Colombo.

England have begun the defence of their Twenty20 World Cup title with a 116-run victory over Afghanistan in Colombo.

The victory has put Stuart Broad's men through to the Super Eights of the competition while Afghanistan have exited following their second defeat in two matches.

The defending champions got off to a terrible start when Craig Kieswetter was bowled for a duck, but Alex Hales and Luke Wright soon built up the run count.

Hales was eventually run out for 31, but Wright went on to make 99 not out to give him the highest total for an England player at a T20 World Cup.

Eoin Morgan (27), Jos Buttler (15) and Jonny Bairstow (12) also helped England post a score of 197 off their 20 overs.

Afghanistan started their innings woefully and were 26-8 after 10 overs.

Gulbodin Naib was the only player from his team to reach double figures with a spectacular 44 before he was bowled by Samit Patel.

Patel, Broad and Graeme Swann took two wickets each while Jade Dernbach and Steve Finn were also among the wickets as Afghanistan were bowled out for 80 off 17 overs.
