Joe Root scores a half-century but England lose Moeen Ali late in the morning session on day five of the second Test against India at Lord's.

A unbeaten half-century from Joe Root during the morning session of day five has given England a good chance of winning the second Test match against India at Lord's this afternoon.

However, the late dismissal of Moeen Ali has swung the match back in India's favour.

Twenty-three-year-old Root returned to the crease this morning alongside Ali with the hosts on 105-4, which was 214 runs adrift of their victory target.

With the pitch having started to deteriorate, India captain MS Dhoni turned to Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the majority of his side's overs, but the spinner was unable to remove either of the England batsmen.

In an over that saw him hit three fours off the bowling of Ishant Sharma, Root surpassed the 50-run mark, while Ali maintained the strike patiently up the other end.

Nevertheless, Sharma returned to bowl the last over before the break and having bounced in five short deliveries, his sixth hit Ali on the glove and was caught at fine leg by Cheteshwar Pujara for 39.

England will begin the afternoon session on 173-5 with Root (52) and Matt Prior at the crease, needing 146 runs to win the encounter.
