South Africa bowl out India for 201 runs on day one of the first Test, but they then lose two early wickets in reply before the close of play.

South Africa have ended a wicket-laden day one of the first Test against India in Mohali on 28-2.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first, but it proved to be the wrong decision as wickets fell on a regular basis.

Consequently, the hosts were reduced to 82-3 by lunch and then 168-7 when the 20-minute tea interval was reached.

Upon the resumption, Ravindra Jadeja (20) was trapped lbw by Vernon Philander, before Imran Tahir ensured that India were all out for just 201 when he bowled both Umesh Yadav (5) and Varun Aaron (0).

Those two wickets where Tahir's first of the match, while spinner Dean Elgar was the pick of the South Africa bowlers with figures of 4-22.

Just like India in their first innings, the away side's reply got off to a stuttering start when Stiaan van Zyl was trapped lbw by Ravichandran Ashwin for 5. His replacement - Faf du Plessis - then lasted just four deliveries before he was bowled by the returning Jadeja without having troubled the scoreboard.

However, that was the 12th and final wicket of the day to fall before the close of play as Elgar (13*) and captain Hashim Amla (9*) guided the Proteas into a position where they will return for the second day 173 runs adrift of the home team with eight wickets in hand.
