Brendon McCullum: 'England blew us off the park'

Brendon McCullum admits that New Zealand were no match for England after slipping to a 210-run loss in the first one-day international.

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has admitted that his side were blown away in the 210-run defeat to England at Edgbaston.

England posted their highest score in a one-day international as Joe Root and Jos Buttler hit centuries to guide the hosts to 408-9, before Steven Finn and Adil Rashid both took four wickets to help bowl the Black Cats out for 198.

McCullum refused to take anything away from a new-look England team after watching his side fall behind in the opening game of the series.

"They blew us off the park," McCullum told Sky Sports News. "It was the complete performance by England. Special performances from Joe Root and Jos Buttler, I thought they were outstanding and to post 400 in any game is outstanding, credit to England, they blew us off the park.

"I think sometimes you've got to admit when you get it wrong at the toss. And the way the ball probably started holding up a little bit in the second innings probably suggested we did get it wrong.

"That was unfortunate but I still don't think it should take away from how outstanding they were with the bat and the ball and in the field. It was a complete performance from England and we've got some work to do."

The second game of the five-match series takes place at The Oval on Friday.
