England have progressed to the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy after overcoming New Zealand by 10 runs in a rain-affected Group A clash in Cardiff.

The hosts lost the toss and were put in to the bat first in the match that was reduced to 24 overs per side.

Led by a captain's knock of 64 from 47, Alastair Cook's England posted a total of 169 all out from 23.3 overs.

Cook was eventually caught by Nathan McCullum, who had earlier dropped the England skipper on three occasions.

Joe Root contributed a solid 38 off 40 balls before England's tail-end collapsed, with their final five wickets costing just 10 runs.

However, Jimmy Anderson's superb bowling swung the momentum back into England's favour following the innings break.

Anderson dismissed openers Luke Ronchi and Martin Guptill in the fourth over as the Black Caps were reduced to 14-2 early on.

New Zealand never truly recovered from their poor start as they were restricted to 159-7, with Kane Williamson topscoring with 67 from 54.
