West End Redbacks release a statement regarding the incident which placed Phil Hughes in a critical condition in hospital after being struck in the head with a cricket ball.

West End Redbacks have issued a statement on the incident that has placed Phil Hughes in a critical condition in a hospital in New South Wales.

The 25-year-old was struck on the head from a delivery from Sean Abbott in his side's clash against the New South Wales Blues in the Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Hughes has given medical treatment at the ground, but was then transferred to St Vincent's Hospital where he underwent scans on the injury, and is now in surgery.

A spokesman for the hospital said in a statement: "When [Hughes] arrived he underwent a set of scans to establish the extent of his injuries and then a decision was made to perform surgery. He is in a critical condition."

The South Australia Cricket Association said: "On behalf of the SACA Board and administration, our thoughts and prayers are with Phil Hughes and his family at this time.

"Phil suffered an injury to his head from a delivery during today's Bupa Sheffield Shield match at the SCG. Phil has been taken to hospital in Sydney and has been accompanied by family members and SACA General Manager High Performance, Tim Nielsen."

The match between the Redbacks and the Blues was abandoned for the day following the incident.
