Team England's Jason Kenny admits that he was "rubbish" in his individual sprint qualifying rounds.

Team England rider Jason Kenny has claimed that he was "rubbish" during the qualifying rounds for the individual sprint at the Commonwealth Games today.

Kenny crept into the first round with the 11th-fastest qualifying time before needing a repechage win over Callum Skinner of Scotland and Lewis Oliva of Wales to reach the quarters.

He will now face Australia's Matthew Glaetzer, who broke a Commonwealth Games record while qualifying, and he admits that it will be "difficult" to find a way past his opponent tomorrow.

"Qualifying was rubbish, which has been the story of qualifying for a while for me personally. I think Philip [Hindes] had a good ride but the rest of us were disappointed, so it's a bit of a funny one," Kenny told reporters.

"We need to think about it and try to address that because I think when we're racing we're not four tenths off the pace, so we need to start making sure we get more out of it. It's difficult when you qualify down the back end because you're racing the fast boys early on, so it's not ideal."

Kenny did pick up a silver medal on the opening day of action at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, losing out to New Zealand in the team sprint.
